List of Healthy and Unhealthy Foods

HEALTHY

Healthy food diets don't have to be all about vegetables and fruits. Meats and poultry can be part of a healthy food diet when used properly. It is also important to include enough proteins in any diet. Eating too little protein is a problem in many countries, which sometimes have high rates of (PEM) protein-energy malnutrition. Meats and poultry are the biggest contributors of protein to your diet. If meat and poultry items are not in your healthy food diet, replacing the proteins they provide are going to require you to learn more about complete, incomplete, and complementary proteins. Healthy foods will always add to your body and will never subtract anything away. Below is a list of healthy foods.

Biscuit

# Sauce Alternatives:

* Vegetable Purees
* Coulis
* Salsas
* Relishes
* Chutneys
* Compotes
* Mojos

Many of the classic sauces you may use are high in fat. Try to use alternative sauces like pureed vegetables. Sauces made with vegetables are light and low in fat and kcalories.
# Nuts and Seeds:

* Nuts:
o Almonds
o Macademian nuts
o Filberts
o Walnuts
o Pinenuts
o Brazil nuts
o Cashews
o Pistachios
o Pecans
* Seeds:
o Flax seeds
o Sunflower seeds
o Sesame seeds
o Pumpkin seeds

Nuts and seeds pack a good amount of vitamins and minerals, plus fiber and proteins. Particularly, nuts contain some fat. Luckily for people who love eating nuts, most of the fat is monounsaturated. Seeds contain less fat and more fiber. The fat and fiber seeds contain will make you feel full longer. Nuts have been linked to reduction in heart disease. The monounsaturated fat in nuts will help lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the bad kind.

UNHEALHTY

It was stated earlier that protein is required in any diet. However, too much protein has no benefits. Eating more protein than you need may add kcalories beyond what you require. Extra protein is not stored as protein but is stored as fat if too many kcalories are taken in. Diets high in protein can also be a concern if you are eating a lot of high-fat animal proteins such as hamburgers and cheese and few vegetable proteins. Eating too many high fat animal foods will raise your blood cholesterol levels. Higher blood cholesterol levels increase your risk of heart disease. High intakes of animal proteins are also associated with certain cancers, such as cancer of the colon and its no secret that too many high fat foods increases the chances of gaining weight. All the foods below when consumed too much become unhealthy foods.

# High Fat Cheese:

* Blue cheese
* Brie
* Feta
* Gouda
* Light cream cheese
* Limburger
* Mozzarella, whole milk
* Parmesan
* Provolone
* Ricotta, whole milk
* Romano
* Swiss
* Tilsit, whole milk
* Cheddar
* Colby
* Cream cheese
* Monterey Jack
* Muenster
* Roquefort

Cheese is an excellent source of nutrients like protein and calcium. Still, because most cheeses are prepared with whole milk or cream, they are also high in saturated fat and cholesterol. Ounce for ounce, meat, poultry, and most cheeses have about the same amount of cholesterol. Cheeses tend to have much more saturated fat. Trying to figure out which cheeses are high in fat can be confusing, because there are so many different kinds. You have whole, part skim, low fat, processed, and many more. Not all reduced fat or part skim cheeses are low in fat, they are just lower in fat than similar natural cheeses.

# Foods High In Cholesterol (120 milligrams or more per serving):

* Biscuit with egg and sausage
o 1 biscuit= 302 amounts of cholesterol
* Egg, cooked
o 1 large= 212 amounts of cholesterol
* Shrimp, breaded and fried
o 6 to 8 shrimp= 200 amounts of cholesterol
* Duck, roasted
o 1/2 duck= 197 amounts of cholesterol

Cholesterol in your blood builds up in the plaque that clogs arteries and is a risk factor for heart disease. Cholesterol is found only in foods of animal origin, like meat, poultry, milk, milk products, fish, egg yolk, and organ meats(liver, kidney, sweetbreads, brains). Egg yolks and organ meats contain the most cholesterol. One egg yolk contains 213 milligrams of cholesterol. About 4 ounces of meat, poultry, or fish (trimmed or untrimmed) contains 100 milligrams of cholesterol. Shrimp is an exception, which is higher in cholesterol. Eggs, meat, and whole milk provide most of the cholesterol we eat and are also sources rich in saturated fat.

7 Rules to Making Perfect Biscuits From Scratch Every Time - Plus 1 Great Buttermilk Biscuit Recipe

Making biscuits is not an exact science, but it does require some basic tips and techniques to get the job done right. Take any any biscuit recipe you have (see below), apply these 7 simple rules to that recipe, and you will be making perfect homemade scratch biscuits every time.

1) Use a good low-gluten, soft-wheat flour.

Biscuit

2) Sift the flour one time by itself, then sift it again with the other dry ingredients in the recipe. This will create the perfect lightness for your biscuits.

3) The flakiest, best-textured biscuits are made when using lard as the fat in the biscuit recipe. If you do not feel good about using all lard for your biscuits, try using half lard and half vegetable shortening. But never use any vegetable oils in any biscuit recipe.

4) Chill the bowl and the fat used, and work quickly to keep the fat from melting. Every grain of flour needs to be covered in fat in order to prevent the flour's gluten from being activated by the water. If you activate the gluten, you will end up with a hard, heavy biscuit.

5) Buy a good biscuit cutter that makes a nice, sharp cut. It should also allow air to escape (an open top), which gives biscuits the chance to rise properly.

6) Pat the biscuit dough out only one time. Re-rolling dough will cause the gluten in the biscuit recipe to toughen the dough, making very heavy and dense biscuits.

7) To bake evenly, turn the baking sheet around one time during the baking. If baking more than one cookie sheet full of biscuits at a time, switch the positions of the pans once during cooking.

Before baking powder was ever invented, cooks always used buttermilk in biscuits. This would help them rise. Although it still works today, people go more for the flavor buttermilk provides than for its ability to rise the biscuit dough.

Buttermilk Biscuit Recipe

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups good soft-wheat flour
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 tablespoons lard, well chilled
2 tablespoons vegetable shortening, chilled
1 cup chilled buttermilk

Directions:

Position the oven rack in the middle, and preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a baking sheet.

Sift the flour, then sift together all dry ingredients in a large bowl. With a large fork or pastry blender, blend in the lard and vegetable shortening until a course meal is formed.

Pour in the buttermilk, and stir together ingredients until a sticky dough is formed.

Flour your hands and a pastry board or counter top. Turn out the dough and knead it gently, just 4 to 6 times. Pat out the dough until it is about 1/2 inch thick.

Cut the dough with a 2 to 3-inch round biscuit cutter, or a round cookie cutter.

Move the biscuits to the baking sheet, arranging them so they just barely tough each other. Bake the biscuits for about 10 minutes, or until raised and golden brown in color (Remember to turn the baking sheet at the halfway point).

Serve the biscuits hot and with butter.

Oven Baked Baby Back Ribs - Low and Slow, Keep These Ribs Tender, Moist and Oh So Delicious!

Nothing compares to ribs out of a real BBQ pit that were slow cooked over wood coals for probably close to twelve hours, tended to by a loving BBQ pit master. Unfortunately, many of us do not have a BBQ pit in our back yard, or we don't live close to what I would call BBQ country; Kansas City or Memphis where one can get true BBQ. So what's a rib lover to do? Turn to the oven I say! With a few simple steps the oven can help you produce some seriously good ribs. However, the one thing they will be lacking is that smoke flavor that accompanies open pit cooking. If you are a smoke lover you can try liquid smoke or a smoky BBQ sauce. Or just forgo the smoke flavor and concentrate on the tender, moist ribs you will be eating in a few hours. Yes, oven ribs are going to take a few hours, but some things just shouldn't be rushed and aren't we already rushing this process by going from a traditional twelve hours to just a few? Trust me, your little bit of effort will be worth it.

Tip: figure half rack of ribs per person

Cookie

Equipment needed:

Large skillet
Large roaster with rack inside
Saucepan
Cookie sheet lined with foil
Oven

Ingredients:

Pork ribs, excess fat removed, cut into 3-4 inch slabs
Salt and pepper
Cooking oil
3-4 cups cooking liquid: beef broth, red wine, water or any combination would work
Your favorite BBQ sauce

Preheat oven to 250 degrees.

When ribs have been cut into slabs and excess fat has been removed sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper. In large skillet heat a few tablespoons of oil over medium high heat. In batches, sear ribs on both sides until golden brown, do not overcrowd pan. Ribs will NOT be cooked through at this point. Also, the underside of the ribs will be difficult to brown, as they will not come in contact with pan, simply heat for a few minutes on the underside.

When ribs are golden brown, place on rack inside large roaster. In a separate saucepan heat your preferred cooking liquid to boiling. Pour cooking liquid into bottom of roaster. Liquid should cover the bottom but not be so high that it's immersing the ribs. Cover ribs and cook at 250 degrees for three hours.

When ribs have finished cooking, remove from oven. Turn broiler on high. Place oven rack 6-8 inches from broiler. Place ribs on cookie sheet underside of ribs facing up. Brush with BBQ sauce. Broil ribs for 2-3 minutes or until brown and bubbly. Watching carefully, they will burn easily! Remove ribs from oven, turn ribs over and brush with BBQ sauce. Broil again for 2-3 minutes or until brown and crispy looking. This last step is to give them a grill-like finish. Enjoy your oven lovin' ribs!

How to Dehydrate Kale

Kale is a nutritious vegetable and is considered to be a form of cabbage. It can be green or purple and is a rich source of calcium, beta carotene and vitamins. Like broccoli kale contains sulforaphane which is believed to have anti-cancer properties.

Kale chips are a popular and very nutritional snack and if you happen to have kale sitting in your garden, fridge or freezer and you are not sure what to do with all of it you can always dehydrate your kale. Dehydrating kale or any other collard greens is a relatively easy process and can be done in your very own kitchen using a dehydrator or the oven.
How To Dehydrate Kale Step by Step

Cookie

Step 1
Get some kale from your garden, fridge or freezer and using a knife, trim the stems. Now separate the leaves from the thick parts of the stems by cutting or tearing the leaves away.

Step 2
Keep the stems which can be used in soups or eaten as is. Wash the leaves in cold water and allow to drain for a bit.

Step 3
If you are using a dehydrator, take the drained leaves and spread them out in a single layer on the trays. To remove any excess moisture wipe the bottom of the trays with a cloth.

Step 4
Set the dehydrator to 105 degrees and dry the leaves until they become crispy. The drying process with a dehydrator will take approximately 6 hours.

Step 5
Once dry, store your dried kale leaves in an airtight container or crumble the leaves and store them in airtight plastic bags to be used later in soups.

If you do not have a dehydrator, don't worry because dehydrated kale chips can just as easily be made in the oven. Here is how: Follow the first 2 steps, but instead of using a dehydrator, preheat your oven to 105 degrees. It is said that food dried at lower temperatures will retain more of its vitamins and enzymes.

Spread your kale leaves out on a baking or cookie plate, place in the oven and leave them there for about 4 - 6 hours until they are crispy.

You can make great tasting kale chips when you dehydrate them with lemon juice or even honey by simply massaging the honey or lemon juice into the kale leaves and sprinkling a little bit of salt over them prior to dehydrating.

The great thing about dehydrating kale and making kale chips is that not only do they taste great but it is also a certain way to up your kids' vegetable intake without them even noticing!

Get A Flat Stomach In 3 Days!

A flat stomach in 3 days? That's a big claim. But quite achievable if the reason your stomach isn't flat is because you suffer from bloating. How to get a flat stomach is one of the most common questions that many women are searching for an answer to. Why? Because whatever size you are a flat stomach makes you look slimmer. Your bum may be big, your hips may be wide but a flat stomach somehow seems to balance everything up giving you a leaner appearance.

Okay then. So how do I get a flat stomach, I hear you ask? Well the first thing is to stand tall. You may be only 5ft nothing but by straightening your back, tucking your tummy in gently and holding your head up high you will instantly look taller and slimmer. Next you need to consider your diet. Carrying too much excess body fat is not the way to get a flat stomach. Now before you curse and say 'here we go again, another diet' just think for a moment about this. If you are gaining weight it's because you are eating more than your body is burning up. Simple as that. Unless of course you have a genuine medical condition which only a doctor can advise on. However for most people the plain truth is you need to either eat a little less or do a little more.

Biscuit

Small changes can make a huge difference. Try walking instead of taking the car everywhere. Eat one less biscuit or slice of bread, drink one less beer or creamy coffee. Don't starve or deprive yourself. Just cut back on your daily consumption and get your body moving a little more. Losing overall body fat will go a long way towards helping you get a flat stomach.

Finally you need to work out if you are suffering from bloating. Food intolerance is a common problem these days and may be preventing you from getting that flat stomach. However by following the right elimination diet and removing food and ingredients you are sensitive to you can get a flat stomach in as little as 3 days. What's more, once you isolate the foods causing you the problem your stomach will stay flat as long as you continue to avoid those foods. Elimination diets such as The Flat Stomach Diet are easy to follow and proven to give results by removing just one single ingredient from the diet.

Is Atkins the Best Low Carb Diet?

Most people have heard of the Atkins diet but is it the best low carb diet? Its supporters have nothing but good to say about it but its detractors aren't backward in expressing their feelings either. The biggest criticism is the near total absence of whole grain foods, which many consider to be the foundation of a healthy diet.

Following the Atkins diet involves almost completely eliminating carbohydrates from your diet. While it might be the best low carb diet, there never used to be much emphasis on exercise. However, that seems to have changed and that can only be a good thing as the best low carb diet in the world won't tone your body and keep your cardio vascular system in good shape like an exercise regime will.

Biscuit

You should be careful that you have the full picture if you want to follow the Atkins regime as there is some very misleading information to be found on the internet. When all's said and done, you only lose weight if you burn more calories than you take in. The restriction or otherwise of your intake of carbohydrate is irrelevant if you've consumed a thousand calories too many during the course of the day.

You may have the impression that you can eat as much as you like during the day as long as you don't eat any carbohydrates but that simply isn't true. There may not be any carbs in six rashers of bacon but there sure are a load of calories that will put on the pounds. Having said that, there are some interesting concepts in this diet and many of the foods which are not allowed are those which contain complex sugars which are difficult for the body to dispose of and that's the reason that many people find this to be the best low carb diet.

If you're thinking about starting this diet, you need to know that it is a diet plan you will need to follow for the rest of your life for you to get the maximum benefits. The restrictions will be fewer when you reach the maintenance phases but basically you can forget cream cakes, doughnuts and similar for ever. However, you'll probably find that your appetite is retrained during the course of the early phases of the plan and you'll feel so buoyed up by your weight loss that you won't even want a cake or a biscuit.

So many people have found Atkins to be the best low carb diet and have achieved great results by following it, so the only way to really be sure is to try it for yourself.

World of Warcraft Gold Secrets of the Goblin Traders

From the World of Warcraft Gold Guide and Journal of Marcus Ty - World of Warcraft Mage of Stormwind.

The Goblins are a strange - and some say, deranged - race that have managed to co-exist with both Horde and Alliance factions in many lands, relying on both their trade and engineering skills to barter an uneasy neutrality. As such, the major Goblin towns of Gadgetzan, Booty Bay and Everlook are perhaps the only locations in Azeroth where both Horde and Alliance factions can come together and freely trade with one another - provided their weapons are sheathed. These towns feature neutral auction houses that, while not linked to either Alliance or Horde establishments, enable trade items to pass between opposing factions. This has enabled some to establish a lucrative trade in 'pets', with fluffy rabbits from Dun Morgh a favourite among the Horde who prefer them tenderised. All auctions are cunningly handled by the neutral Goblins.

Cookie

You can't trust a Goblin, but all admire their skill in barter and trade, but keep a firm hold on your purse strings when attempting to buy from these shady of wheeler-dealers lest you walk away from the transaction lighter in gold and without a shirt on your back. But whatever we think about Goblins, much can be learned from these slippery of creatures when it comes to our own trading.

Here are five top Goblin trading tips:

1. Don't be shy

The first lesson from the Goblin school of trading is 'don't be shy'. You'll often hear the Goblin traders hawk their wares by shouting to all who walk within earshot. 'Have I got a deal for you', is commonly heard up and down the streets of Gadgetzan and the boardwalks of Booty Bay. We can use the Trade Channel is a similar way. If we have just crafted a 'Shining Silver Breastplate' and posted it for auction, it helps to tell the world about it. 'Get your Shining Silver Breastplate, now in the AH - good price!' You'll be surprised how many whispers you'll get asking 'How much!'

2. Get the price right

Now the second Goblin lesson on trade was said to have been stolen from the Gnomes: 'Don't sell yourself short'. Make sure you don't under price your goods. Always check the latest prices by searching for the item in the Auction House and price your item accordingly. At the same time, look out for items that have been priced too low. You'll often find new players pricing their items at very low or silly prices. Snap-up these items by placing a bid or buying them out. It's worth a punt.

3. Avoid competition

The third Goblin lesson on trade was taken from the Elves who prefer to trade one-on-one. It can be summed up in the phrase: 'A word in your ear'. The Elves often avoid the competition of the Auction process by announcing an item on the Trade Channel and asking folk to 'whisper' them if they have an interest. This technique needs some skill if you are to close the deal. Once a price is agreed, the trade is made using the Trade panel.

4. Seek out the lone traders

You'll also find many a Goblin trader wandering around Azeroth. These lone traders often possess one-of-a-kind items that are much sought after in the Auction House and often sell far above the merchant's price. An example is Zixil (Merchant Supreme) of Booty Bay who can be found wandering the Hillsbrad Foothills between Southshore and the Tarren Mill. I've listed more examples in my journal which you can obtain from the source at the end of this article.

5. Seasonal sensitivity

The Goblins have a saying: 'Snow in the dale, its time for the Winter Veil'. They also say: 'Don't eat Dragonbreath Chilli on your first date', but that's another matter! The point being that the price of many goods sold at the Auction House will have a seasonal value. For example, the price of Small Eggs are much in demand at the time of Winter Veil to make the quest item of Gingerbread Cookies

So, be you Horde or Alliance, learn from the Goblin traders.

Four Facts About Chocolate Chip Cookies

Cookies are one of the most popular biscuits in the world - here are some interesting and fun facts about chocolate chip cookies, which include the difference between an American and an English Cookie, and how the cookie was born.

Ruth Wakefield of the Toll House restaurant is credited to be the first person to bake a chocolate chip cookie as we know it today. The chocolate chip cookie arose because she was actually a little bit lazy. Ruth decided to throw in small chunks of chocolate into her cookie mix assuming it would melt (and therefore produce drop cookies she was aiming for).   Ruth assumed the chocolate would melt and nobody would know the difference. For Ruth, it was a shortcut that really paid off. Her customers loved the chocolate chip cookie and the 'Toll House Cookie' was born. Nestle later bought the trademark.

Cookie

In the UK, the term 'cookies' generally refers to Chocolate Chip cookies, and other forms of cookie are called 'biscuits' - in America, generally every type of biscuit is called a cookie.

Cookies are very important in Pennsylvania - on February 7, 2001, the Cookie was declared the official cookie of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

Historically 'hardtack' biscuits played a very important role in travel - they stayed fresh for long periods, and therefore were a great food with a very long storage life. For years when setting sail, one of the most important items carried on a ship was cookies.

If you do love cookies, I recommend you find a place that serves handmade cookies - they'll test much better than anything in a packet.

Looking For a Great Italian Meatball Recipe?

Looking for a great Italian meatball recipe? Wrap your lips around this one.

This recipe was given to my by my 105 year old Sicilian great-grandma. This is the real deal.

Cookie

The Best Meatball Recipe

Can be prepared in 45 minutes or less.

Ingredients

1 pound combined beef, veal, pork (must be fresh)

3 large eggs

1 cup grated Romano Locatelli Cheese

1 cup bread crumb

1 clove garlic - minced

1 teaspoon salt

Preparation

(All mixing is done be hand)

In a large bowl mix beef/veal/pork with eggs. Then add bread crumb, cheese, and salt. Finally add minced garlic in stages. Add a little garlic, then mix. Add some more, then mix. This way all the garlic does not end up in one meatball. Now, it's time to roll up the balls. Average size is roughly 2 inches in diameter. I usually get around 18 to 20
meatballs per pound.

IMPORTANT! Do not cook meatballs in your pasta sauce! Meatballs cooked in sauce loose their flavor. The real key to a tasty meatball is cooking the them in an oven. So, heat oven to 375. Place meatballs on a rack - then on a cookie tray.

Bake for 12 minutes on one side then 10 minutes for the other.

BEWARE If you choose to fry your meatballs make sure you are alone. The aroma is so overwhelming that anyone in smelling distance will be steal your meatballs right out of the frying pan.

I freeze the meatballs in plastic bags and take out what I need per dinner. I just drop the meatballs into the sauce as if heats up.

Buon Appetito!

Civil War Food - What Union and Confederate Soldiers Ate

The modern U.S. army has a wide array of food products available to them in base camps and in the field. There are a large number of MREs (which are actually quite tasty) and other portable foods available to them when on missions and when stationed in hostile terrain. And when posted at an established base camp, the food that is prepared is also quite good. A large part of this is of course the ready availability of large quantities of any sort of food imaginable in today's modern environment. In fact, today's soldiers have the best food ever made available to a fighting force.

But it wasn't always that way.

Biscuit

Take the Civil War. Civil War food kept the soldiers fed and not much else. Lets take a look at the diet that comprised the typical Civil War food ration. There were several issues that affected the food that was supplied to the Civil War soldiers. These include the organization of the Commissary Department - which was tasked with the acquisition and distribution of food to the soldiers in the field, the season which determined if fresh food was available or if it was preserved in some way and the ability of the food to stay good for long term storage and transportation.

Prior to the war, the concentration of Commissaries was in the North so when the Civil War began, the North had a great advantage as they already had an existing Commissary Department that was already trained in how to acquire and transport food to soldiers in the field. Their job was to work with the troop numbers and schedules and keep a constant supply of foods going to each area where troops were stationed so that the soldiers could keep on fighting without worrying about where their next meal would be coming from. It took the Confederacy several years to develop a working Commissary so being a soldier of the South was more difficult. It required real dedication to be fighting when you didn't know where your next meal was coming from. Because of this lack of infrastructure, the South had to do a lot of foraging for food between battles until the supply lines were up and operational.

Civil War soldier food was typically very simple fare - often consisting of meat, coffee, sugar and hardtack - a type of dried biscuit. The meat was often salted or dried so it would last a bit longer and fruits and vegetables were rarities on the battlefield. Because the soldiers were often in the field, they needed to carry rations with them. They had a special bag - called a haversack - which was made of canvas with an inner cloth bag that could be washed to get food debris cleaned out once in a while. But even with this design, the bags were often quite contaminated and foul smelling. Cleanliness was typically not high on the Civil War soldiers priority list.

Union soldiers and Confederate soldiers typically had a different mix of rations. A Union soldier might have salt pork, fresh or salted beef, coffee, sugar, salt, vinegar, dried fruit and vegetables. And if it was in season, they might have fresh carrots, onions, turnips and potatoes. A Confederate soldier typically had bacon, corn meal, tea, sugar, molasses and the very occasional fresh vegetable.

The other difference in Civil War food between the Union and Confederate armies was the type of bread product they had available to them. Confederate soldiers had something called "Johnnie Cake" that they made in the field from cornmeal, milk and a few other ingredients. The Union soldiers had hardtack, also referred to as "tooth dullers" or "sheet iron crackers". Hardtack was manufactured in large factories in the North and was a staple food for the Union soldiers. Hardtack got its name because it was often not used until months after it was made and during that time, it hardened rock solid which is how it got its nicknames.

As you can see, food has come a long way due to the advent of technologies that allow for better preservation of a wide variety of foods. Gone are the days of weevil infested hardtack. They have been replaced with modern vacuum seal technologies that allow foods to stay fresh and tasty years after they have been packages. And since they say an army is run by its stomach, it is no surprise that the modern soldier is the best the world has ever seen.

How to Get Your Girlfriend Back - Avoiding the Twelve Biggest Breakup Mistakes and "Pet Cemetery"

In this article I will be introducing you to "Pet Cemetery Persuasion" and why it is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when trying to salvage a relationship. Learning the differences between this faulty type of persuasion and the more elegant methods will not only help you get your girl back but ensure that the two of you have a happy and successful future together. Also, towards the end of this article, we will be discussing the twelve biggest breakup mistakes I see guys make time and time again and why it's so important to avoid these deadly blunders.

During a breakup, it's very common for guys to use a variety of persuasion techniques to convince their girlfriends to take them back. Unfortunately, most of the techniques that they attempt to use are detrimental to re-establishing a happy relationship. One such technique is referred to as "Pet Cemetary Persuasion." This is a blanket term for when someone uses guilt, threats or any other persuasion strategy that makes others feel forced into doing something against their will. This usually results in negative consequences for the persuader.

Biscuit

It is easiest to explain Pet Cem by using a conversational example. And although this article is written from a man's perspective, I feel that it is helpful to examine some of the mistakes that women make in relationships, as well. In the following conversation, Lisa is doing her best to persuade her husband, Joe, to accompany her to the most dreaded of all places: his mother-in-law's.

Lisa: "Joe, my mother just called and wants to make dinner for us tomorrow. We need to be there by six at the latest so make sure you get home from work on time."

Joe: "What are you talking about? The guys are coming by for poker tomorrow. You know Friday is poker night."

Lisa: "Well, my mother wants us there, so you'll have to cancel your game."

Joe: "Honey, you can't tell me the night before that you made other plans for us. I have seven people showing up tomorrow. I can't just cancel on them last minute. We can go to your mother's on Saturday."

Lisa (becoming angry): "We haven't been to her house since Christmas and all she does is ask about you. I'm sick of making excuses for why we never visit. It's important to me that we see her and if you love me, it should be important to you, too. Why is it so hard for you to show that you care about me?"

Joe: "I do care about you and it is important to me. But the point is that you're forcing me to change my plans at the last minute. We can see your mom some other day. It's no big deal."

Lisa (about to explode): "Damn it, Joe. It is a big deal but you just can't get it through your head. Well, maybe this will help. Call your friends right now and tell them that the game is cancelled. And if you don't finish those calls in the next ten minutes, your poker buddies will never be allowed to set foot in this house ever again. Until you start showing me some respect, I have to treat you like a little boy. Now go pick up the phone."

Joe (storming off): "Ok, fine."

Lisa just made some serious persuasion mistakes in the above example. Were you able to pick them out? If you are somewhat unsure about where she went wrong or have ever found yourself in a similar verbal exchange with someone, you need to pay close attention to the rest of this chapter.

BURYING THEM IN THE PET CEMETERY

Pet Cemetery Persuasion falls under the category of what persuasion expert "Doktor Sulo" refers to as "one-shot persuasion." This term comes from the world of sales and is used to differentiate the selling methods used with a customer whom you will only be dealing with once, and the methods of "long term persuasion," which are used when it's best to foster a long-term buyer-seller relationship.

For instance, a used car salesperson will usually pitch his prospects in a different way than would a financial advisor. The car salesperson might use certain techniques to engage his prospect's emotions, bring them to a fever pitch and take advantage of their current emotional state. He won't have to worry much about how he'll be perceived by his customer in the future because he knows they will probably never see each other again. This can increase the temptation to resort to deceitful or unethical sales practices.

The financial planner, however, will be in touch with his clients over a long period of time, so it's in his best interest to create a long-term positive perception of himself which will help to ensure repeat business. The difference between these two methods is equivalent to chopping a tree down to get at the apples, and using a ladder so you can pick the fruit each season for years to come.

When it comes to romantic relationships, it makes obvious sense to think of your partner as someone with whom you would want to foster long-term rapport. And just like a smart financial planner, you need to keep in mind that all your persuasive efforts should result in a win-win situation for both parties. If not, you will eventually have to deal with some serious buyer's remorse.

Sadly, it seems that people use all sorts of sneaky tactics to get what they want from their partners and then act surprised when they have to deal with the backlash. How do you act when things aren't going your way? Do you nag, whine, chastise, place blame, withdraw, berate, or belittle? These are all examples of Pet Cemetery Persuasion.

The name for this concept was inspired by a popular Stephen King book entitled, "Pet Cemetery." And just in case you haven't read it (or seen the movie) here is the gist of what happens:

A woman has a cat she loves very much. While she is away on vacation the cat is killed. Her husband becomes distressed over the situation and looks for a way to fix the problem before his wife returns.

Somehow, he hears about an old Indian burial ground not too far from where he lives. It is rumored that whatever is buried in this sacred ground comes back to life. Of course, the man is skeptical, but he decides it can't hurt to give it a shot and see what happens.

Before he can make it to the cemetery, an old Indian approaches the man and warns him about his course of action. The Indian says that while things buried here do come back to life, they will never be the same. But the man fails to heed this advice, and buries the cat regardless. A few days later, the cat returns to the house looking a little dirty, but otherwise in great shape and the man is thrilled. He thinks that the cat is back just as it was before and that his wife will never realize what had happened.

But as the days pass, the cat starts to change. It becomes more rabid and demonic and attacks anyone who comes near it.

When his wife returns, she is happy to see "Fluffy" alive, but her happiness is short lived; her son is struck and killed by a truck a few days later. Her husband refuses to accept the loss of their child and decides to bury their son in the Pet Cemetery, without his wife's knowledge. But this time, when little Junior comes back to life, he goes on a vicious killing spree which leaves his mother dead and his father barely alive.

While this is a rather macabre example, having a strong visual in mind will make it much easier to understand this next principle: When you try to coerce someone to do something against his will, (while he is completely aware of it), you are metaphorically smacking him over the head with a shovel and burying him in the Pet Cemetery. He may seem fine at first, but you had better sleep with one eye open. He'll be back shortly to say hello.

Remember the conversation between Joe and Lisa? Let's take a look at what happens the day after their argument:

On the way home from Lisa's mother's house:

Lisa: "It was really nice to see mom again. I think she was happy to see us too. Wasn't the food fantastic?"

Joe: (silence)

Lisa: "Honey?"

Joe: (grumbling) "Yeah. Wonderful."

Lisa: "What's your problem?"

Joe: (furious) "I went to your dinner and you're still whining? What the hell is the matter with you? All you do is nag and complain!"

Lisa (confused and getting angry herself): "Why are you yelling at me? I thought we had a nice time tonight and now you're starting in on me for no reason!"

Joe: "No reason? Are you completely out of your mind? Just shut your mouth and let me drive!"

This is an example of what happens when you allow yourself to get caught up in negative emotions and lose sight of the bigger picture. When Joe refused to grant Lisa's request, she blew her stack and dragged poor Joe, kicking and screaming, to the Pet Cemetery.

Lisa had plenty of other persuasive options available to her, although she might not have been aware of them. However, many people who don't know how to properly handle their anger and frustration will resort to Pet Cem tactics because they will be oblivious to the end result of these methods while easily satisfied by the immediate gratification of their short-term results. In other words, the quickest and easiest path to getting their way is the one they will choose.

For Lisa, her first attempt at Pet Cem was to use guilt as a weapon. Instead of listening to the valid reason Joe had for not wanting to cancel his game, Lisa accused him of not caring about her. When Joe still refused to budge, she started using threats to get her way. Under this kind of pressure, Joe had no choice but to concede and Lisa got the result she was looking for. Things returned to normal shortly after...

...or did they? What Lisa didn't notice was the growing resentment that Joe was harboring. It took a full day to brew and then completely exploded in her face when she least expected it. "Hi honey. It's me, Joe... back from the dead."

While there are many variations of Pet Cem behaviors such as yelling, threatening, or begging, I feel that the most dangerous is using guilt to get what you want. It's no secret that most women are attracted to strong men and using guilt as a weapon is the tactic of the weak and needy. But sadly, it also seems that guilt is usually the first method people resort to when they can't seem to get their way, such as Lisa did in the above example.

Now sometimes these strategies will work. Just remember that whether you beg like a little child to gain her sympathy or threaten to put her X-rated videos on the internet, the end result is that your girl will feel coerced and will start to resent you, which is not something you need in your relationship.

IS ALL PERSUASION MANIPULATIVE?

Many people may not realize that there is a huge difference between persuasion and coercion. Persuasion makes people feel good when they do what you want, whereas coercion is the evil twin of persuasion. It's the equivalent of getting people to do your bidding at gunpoint. In this case, you use a mental gun like a "guilt gun" or a "blame gun" but it's still a weapon pointed right at their heads. While they may do what you want, they will not feel good when they do it. It will be like having to change someone's bed pan; you'll get it done because you have to, but you'll be dragging your feet the whole way.

Using this kind of manipulation strategy during a breakup (or before things get too far gone) can keep a relationship going but it completely destroys the spark (the attraction) which is the foundation for everything that you have. The Pet Cemetery is such a great metaphor because at first glance, you think everything's great because your relationship is alive and well, but upon closer inspection you realize that things have changed drastically and your partner is just a poor replica of who she was before. Your goal after a breakup should be to get the same person back that you used to have, not to turn them into a whole new person who hates your guts.

Think of a time when you felt forced into making a decision that you were reluctant to make. How did you feel about the situation? More importantly, how did you feel about the person who was using a manipulation strategy? Is this the way you want your girl to feel about you?

Here's a more extreme example that illustrates Pet Cem clearly, albeit rather graphically:

Many years ago, I was watching an episode of the show "America's Most Wanted." This particular episode featured a beautiful twenty-five year old blond named Samantha who was dating a twenty-seven year old successful gym owner named Hans. They enjoyed a great relationship which progressed to a discussion about marriage. Hans decides that he wasn't ready to get married, but still wanted to be with Samantha. Samantha wasn't having it.

Eventually, she gave him an ultimatum: "If you don't marry me, I'll go find someone else who will."

Hans didn't balk and continued to put the marriage off. So Samantha, frustrated, ran to Hans' best friend, Jack, and told him her woes. Jack comforted her by calling Hans an idiot and saying how any man would consider himself lucky to be her husband. The two continued to talk to each other over several weeks and began to form an intimate relationship. Less than a month later, the two (Jack and Samantha) got married.

Hans was completely distraught and in shock over the double betrayal. Not yet content, Samantha went ahead and poured salt in his wounds by expressing her total satisfaction with Jack. This led to several confrontations between the two men and Jack warned Hans to stay away from his wife.

A few weeks went by. Hans finally called Samantha and threatened to kill himself if she didn't come back to him. Samantha, touched by this confession, expressed her remorse over what had transpired. She realized that she had made a mistake because she had loved Hans all along.

This led to one last confrontation between Jack and Hans. But this time, exchanging words was not enough for Jack, so he took it a step further by hiring a hit man to kill Hans. Jack is now on the run from the law for the murder of his best friend.

In a televised interview, Samantha expressed how she had always wanted to be with Hans. "While Jack was fun to be around," she said, "I knew it wouldn't last because my heart belongs to Hans." Choking back tears, Samantha's final words were, "And now I have nothing. I hope they catch Jack and prosecute him for what he did."

Samantha had desired Hans all along. But when things weren't going her way, she tried to bury her relationship in the Pet Cemetery to get what she wanted. In actuality, her strategy did work to some degree and maybe if Hans wasn't killed their relationship would have seemed normal again, for a little while at least. But it never would have been the same.

This sort of thing happens all the time, often in a less extreme way but with similar results. Typically, Pet Cem behavior will rear its ugly head after a person has tried numerous ways of getting what they want but to no avail. It's usually a very effective method, since it attempts to persuade by taking away something that a person holds emotionally dear to them. However, it's nothing more than a behavioral padlock that restricts a person's choices to the extreme.

So remember that anytime someone feels coerced against their will, it's a result of someone using manipulation as opposed to persuasion. And since this can be extremely detrimental to a continued positive relationship, you always need to look upon these inferior methods as the equivalent to selling your soul to get what you want; while it may seem like a victory, the person you manipulate will lose all respect for you, and once that's gone you'll have nothing left.

This is even more dangerous when it happens with a girlfriend or ex. I truly believe that women need to feel a deep sense of respect towards their partners to be fully satisfied in a relationship and any harbored resentment will eventually eat away at that respect until it is completely consumed. So beware of turning your girl into an evil "Fluffy" who will be secretly waiting for the right time to claw your eyes out.

THE TWELVE BREAKUP MISTAKES YOU MUST AVOID AT ALL COSTS

If you are currently experiencing a recent breakup, the first thing you must do is look over the following list of major mistakes and notice if you've been using any of them unknowingly, along with making any Pet Cemetery mistakes as well. Of course, the next thing to do is to stop these behaviors immediately. These mistakes are brutal relationship killers and need to be avoided like the plague. Here are the top twelve:

1. Refusing to "Shut Down the Town" from the very beginning of the breakup

While it may at first seem counter-intuitive, it's the most important part of this strategy and acts as a foundation upon which everything else is built. The best course of action right now is to stop taking her calls, stop talking to her friends, and avoid seeing her in person.

2. Being too nice and understanding. Telling her things like "I will wait for you," kissing her ass, etc.

If you have ever studied the science of Behaviorism, you will realize that the best way to train an animal to behave correctly is by rewarding the behaviors you want more of and ignoring the behaviors you would like extinguished. Obviously, the very act of breaking up with you is faulty conduct and by being kind, understanding and "giving her time," you are rewarding her behavior and tossing the bad dog a biscuit.

3. Loving 100% to get your lover back

This strategy, which one relationship expert advocates, is in the same vein as mistake number two. This person recommends, in a nutshell, being as sweet as pie to your girl no matter how badly she treats you while also letting her know that you'll wait as long as it takes.

While this strategy may work once in a while, you are completely emasculating yourself in the process. Even if your girl decides to eventually take you back, she will have lost a tremendous amount of respect for you which will prevent the relationship from lasting. Remember that how she takes you back is more important than when she takes you back.

4. Displaying neediness

The first three mistakes all fall under the umbrella of neediness. This is when your true feelings for your girl, as well as your respect for yourself, become completely overshadowed by desperation and misery. A lot of people actually misconstrue the feelings that their neediness creates for actual love. I will do my best to explain this in depth later on, but for now please realize that there is a huge difference between the two. Showing neediness is one of the biggest killers of attraction and must be avoided at all costs.

5. Losing your temper

Not being in control of your emotions, including your anger, is another major mistake. When someone knows exactly how to push your buttons to elicit an emotional reaction out of you, they are holding a remote control for your brain which not only makes you lose a tremendous amount of power but allows you to be easily manipulated.

Remember that there is a time and place to blow up and let yourself yell and scream. But you must decide when that time is and not just haphazardly respond to situations without conscious choice. In other words, you must be in control of your emotional state and be the one who chooses which emotions you display and at which times.

6. Refusing to date other women

Never underestimate the power of the jealousy card. A woman will feel much differently about a man who is in the field scouting for new women than she will about a man who sits home with his buddies each night and drinks his life away. There should be no excuse that keeps you from constantly prospecting, and by disregarding this important step you are artificially inflating your girl's market price.

I need to make a very important distinction between doing this the right way and using it as a Pet Cem maneuver. You do not want to use other women as weapons, period. If you throw it in your girl's face that you are dating (or sleeping with) other women (either during the breakup or after the two of you are back together), it becomes a cheap Pet Cemetery tactic that can easily backfire. However, if you keep it a secret and she finds out through other sources, it will usually have a strong effect. The act of you not flaunting it makes it that much more powerful.

The only time you should bring up your exploits in conversation is if she asks you directly. Then, you can tell her honestly that you've been seeing someone. Any faltering here looks like you are hiding something. As long as you say it matter-of-factly and are not seeking a reaction from her, this can easily make her very jealous.

7. Not having a detailed plan

Going into a breakup without a clear-cut plan is like parachuting into the jungle, in the midst of a war, without a map or compass. Things can get ugly out there and the last thing you want to worry about is having to find your way out of the bush once your emotions start clouding your judgment; one wrong move can lead you into enemy territory where you'll be left emotionally captured, locked up and tortured for years to come.

Also, a plan helps you stay consistent with your original intent and this consistency is very powerful. A lot of guys will attempt to stick with one approach, but then do the complete opposite when it fails. For example, they may start off by begging their girls to reconsider, and when that doesn't work, they may resort to threats and other malicious behavior. Unfortunately, most girls can see right through this sort of manipulation strategy and will immediately distance themselves from the manipulator.

8. Not having a strategy to deal with the emotional pain

Let's face it. A breakup can be one of the most difficult and painful experiences in your life, and sometimes the pain just gets to be too much. At this point, many guys look for any way out, even if it means giving up their pride, self-respect, manhood, etc. Our girls fell in love with us in the first place because of these traits, and laying them down in the line of fire while waving a white flag is not going to have your sweetie come running to clean off your wounds. Why would she? You're no longer the man she used to love.

To prevent all this from happening, you must have the proper tools on hand to deal with the mental pain that may come up. Thankfully, I have compiled the most advanced forms of mental medicine known to man and will be teaching them to you step by step. These will make the difference between forcing yourself to follow the "Get Your Girl Back System" and effortlessly doing what you need to do.

9. Allowing yourself to stay "stuck"

Letting the breakup completely stagnate your desire to move forward in life is one of the worst things you can allow. Once your ambition falls to the wayside, it is only a matter of time before severe depression sets in.

One of the most important things in life is having a strong sense of purpose. A breakup can easily allow you to forget what you are here to do, especially when living without your girl can make life seem totally meaningless. This is a huge trap which has crushed many men financially, emotionally and spiritually. Luckily, you will have all the tools you'll need to push forward despite any feelings of hopelessness and futility.

10. Failure to maintain a social network.

You must allow yourself to see your friends and maintain your sociability during a breakup. Otherwise, you will end up like that guy from the movie "Swingers" who sat in his house for weeks waiting for his girl to call. And remember, when you are out with your buddies you are not allowed to talk about your girl! The whole point of going out with friends is to get your mind off the situation and to learn to have fun without a girlfriend in your life. Also, if you constantly drone on and on about the breakup, your friends will eventually tire of it and stop inviting you out.

11. Mistaking the reasons your girl gives you for the breakup as the real reasons and acting upon those instead

A woman will very rarely be completely honest with you during a breakup. Sometimes she will try and explain herself by saying things like, "I just need some time alone," and "My life is so complicated right now," while at other times she may be keeping you in the dark completely. I have found that the reasons why a girl leaves her man are almost always the same universally, no matter what she may tell you. And of course, she has very good reasons for not being completely up front with you, which will be covered shortly.

12. Giving her ultimatums

Be careful of ultimatums! It can, however, be a smart move to set up ultimatums in a relationship early on, such as, "I don't tolerate dishonesty or cheating, and if that ever occurs between us, I'm out the door in a heartbeat." By establishing boundaries and refusing to allow your principles to be compromised, you will be setting a good tone for your relationship. The problems start when you begin to use ultimatums to manipulate unwanted behavior.

For example, when you say to your girl, "If you don't stop hanging out with Monica, we're through," or "If I ever see you flirting with that guy, you'll never see me again," you're making a serious error. The problem with these kinds of ultimatums (in addition to being Pet Cem tactics) is that they trap you. Most of the time they won't have any effect on your girl's behavior (many women will test you to find out if you're for real) and they will leave you stuck having to dish out the consequences you previously threatened.

At this point, if you fail to deliver on your threat your girl will realize that your words carry no weight and will start to lose respect for you. And God forbid she realizes that she can do whatever she wants with no repercussions. You'll be in for a world of hurt, my friend.

Being careful enough to avoid the mistakes we have just covered will make the road to getting your girl back that much smoother. I wish you the best of luck.

Pop these in the oven for about 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown. When the color seems right, remove from the baking sheet to cool on a wire rack. When the biscotti are cool enough to handle, slice 'em up! Using a long-bladed knife, slice the cookies into 1/2 inch slices.

Place the slices cut side up back onto the baking sheet. Bake for an additional 6 to 10 minutes on each side. Remove from heat, and now you've got a chocolate-y and delicious alternative to the traditional biscotti, which are sure to be a big a hit!

One last note: to really kick up the yum-factor on either of these Italian biscotti recipes, try dipping one side of each cookie in melted milk or dark chocolate, and then heck - dip 'em again in some chopped up almonds or hazelnuts. Now doesn't that just sound like a tiny piece of heaven?

Using Realia in the Classroom

What is Realia? If you're thinking the word 'realia' sounds vaguely Latin, then you'd be correct. In the TEFL classroom, the word realia means using real items found in everyday life as an aid to teaching English. Using realia helps to make English lessons memorable by creating a link between the objects and the word or phrase they represent. So how and why should teachers use realia in the classroom?

The advantages of using Realia As English teachers, the use of realia is only limited by your imagination. It is possible to use realia to teach almost any subject. Using realia stimulates the mind, and is one way of encouraging creativity by involving the senses. Realia saves time, as recognition of an object is immediate and so cuts out the need for lengthy explanations and drawing funny pictures on the board. Elicitation becomes much easier and holding up the object with a raised eyebrow will usually result in the desired word being spoken.

Biscuit

Realia breathes life into new vocabulary, and the chances of your students remembering the new words you have taught them increases. Take the word biscuit: the probability of remembering it becomes much higher after experiencing the taste, touch and smell of the object! Realia doesn't have to be limited to food or drink. Timetables, tickets, newspapers, clothes... in fact any object you can think of can be used as a teaching aid.

Won't I look silly bringing teabags into the lesson if I'm teaching adults? No! Adults are usually very receptive to realia, and find this approach unusual and refreshing. Bringing realia into your lessons is a great icebreaker, and serves as a useful tool to prompt conversation. It also takes some of the attention and pressure off you by concentrating the students' minds on the object and word in question.

Many adults have had bad experiences of learning English at school, and often remember their English lessons as being dull and repetitive. Using realia and other visual aids will generate interest and help create an atmosphere conducive to learning.

Realia for young learners If you are going to teach English to young children, realia is a must. Young children are at the perfect age to learn a language and as visual learners, you should try to tap into their natural creativity. Bring in fruit, vegetables and lots of toys. Children love to role-play and enjoy playing games, so ask them to move animals onto tables, under tables, or around the farmyard. Make up simple stories using toy animals or puppets, and children will enjoy their English lessons, and be motivated to learn.

Using Realia for learning vocabulary/grammar It is unrealistic to bring real objects into your classroom for every single word that you wish to teach and some words will lend themselves better than others to using realia. Remember, realia can be used indirectly as a tool for teaching grammar; for example, items of food and drink are perfect for teaching uncountable and countable nouns.

Using Realia in Role-play Don't stop at using realia to learn vocabulary or grammar. Use objects in role-plays to make the situation more realistic. This could be something as simple as a mobile phone or your train tickets. Using realia is only limited by your imagination: here are some ideas on how to use realia in your lessons.

  • Use your country's flag and a map to show students where you live and to help them learn the names of foreign countries
  • Stage a fashion show after learning the vocabulary for items of clothing
  • Utilise toys such as plastic animals and toy cars in games for young learners
  • Bring in items such as biscuits and plastic cups to practise ordering drinks
  • Timetables, tickets and pedestrian maps of London are great for practising role-play scenarios such as asking for directions, or buying tickets
  • Teaching business English? Use mobile phones to create telephone conversations, practise giving numbers, arranging meetings, or discussing a new product

Healthy Valentine's Day Treats For the Little Ones

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, which means that its time to whip up some creative treats for you and the kids. While Valentine's Day is always associated with sweet treats such as chocolate and candy, you can create some yummy treats for the kids while still keeping it on the healthy side.

Valentine's Day Kabobs

Cookie

One way you can let the children indulge in a special Valentine's Day treat, without losing nutritional value is by making Fruit Kabobs with Yogurt Dip. You can buy red or pink plastic skewers and then load them up with strawberries, cherries, watermelon and red seedless grapes. You can use a tiny heart shaped cookie cutter for the berries and watermelon to add to the festive look. Low-fat vanilla yogurt works well as a dip and strawberry yogurt would be perfect with your theme.

Here's another nutritious treat idea for your favorite little Valentines. For breakfast on this special day, make heart shaped muffins. You won't need a special muffin pan either. Just fill your muffin liners with the batter and then press a piece of tin foil, rolled to 1/2inch thick between the muffin liner and the pan to shape the muffin liner into a heart.

Here's one that's a bit different:

Strawberry Roll-ups

You will need: 4 (6 inch) soft tortilla shells
Low-fat Strawberry cream cheese
4 T Strawberry jam

Spread the cream cheese evenly across each tortilla. Add 1 T of strawberry jam, spread down the center. Fold in the edges of the tortilla, about two inches. Now roll the tortilla up- jelly roll style. Slice into 2-inch bites for the perfect Valentines Day snack.

Mini- Fruit Smoothies for Valentine's Day

Little ones enjoy fruit smoothies, so why not serve them on Valentine's Day to show your kids how much you appreciate them- in a nutritious, tasty way. They're so easy to make, you'll find yourself making up a batch even when it's not a special day. Simply combine a blend of fruits in your blender, with a little fruit juice added for liquid. You can serve them in decorated Dixie cups for little hands and embellish them with cocktail umbrellas for a special touch.

In staying with the theme of the day, use mostly red fruits and juice. Strawberries and raspberries are excellent options and you can mix in bananas without changing the color scheme. Apple juice combines well with the berries for your liquid.
Jell-O Hearts- Without the Sugar and Dyes

Little ones love Jell-O, but as a Mom you stress about all that sugar and artificial coloring. Try this instead for a nutritious option:

Boil 1 cup of water, add ½ cup of grape juice and 1 packet of unflavored gelatin. Stir until dissolved. After it cools slightly, add another ½ cup of grape juice. Pour into heart shaped molds and refrigerate until firm. If you don't have heart shaped molds, you can pour the gelatin mixture into a baking pan and then cut out heart shapes with a cookie cutter after it is firm.

These treats will add some special touches to Valentine's Day for you and your kids. You can make them as a surprise or the children can partake in the fun!

5 Healthy Valentine Snacks You Can Make For Your Sweetheart

Valentine's Day doesn't have to be just about roses and boxes of chocolate. You can surprise your sweetheart with some healthy valentine snacks this year that not only good for him or her, but also delicious. Here are five healthy snack ideas that are perfect for Valentine's Day.

Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

Cookie

Combine ripe strawberries with dark chocolate for a healthy, yet indulgent Valentine snack. Start with large, ripe strawberries. Melt some dark chocolate over a double boiler or in the microwave. Dip the strawberries halfway into the dark chocolate. Allow the excess chocolate to drip off, and then place them on some wax paper to allow the chocolate to harden.

Heart Shaped Grilled Cheese Sandwich

For these cute grilled cheese sandwiches, layer a piece of low fat cheese between two slices of wheat bread. Use a large heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut the sandwich into a heart. Spray a hot pan with a non-stick cooking spray and add the sandwich. Grill it until it is golden brown on both sides and the cheese is melted. These sandwiches are a perfect snack on their own, or serve them with a cup of tomato soup for a light lunch.

Cupid's Arrows

This snack also makes an attractive appetizer. Start by washing some grape or cherry tomatoes and cutting some low-fat mozzarella cheese into cubes. Thread them on some kabob sticks, alternating the tomatoes and the cheese. Lay the "arrows" on a platter and drizzle with a little bit of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar to finish off. Even cupid could not resist this Mediterranean inspired snack.

Valentine's Day Smoothie

This very-berry and pink smoothie makes a great midday snack or even a filling breakfast. Start by adding some low-fat strawberry to your blender. Toss in some frozen berries (we like strawberries) and a frozen banana if you'd like. Add a little orange juice and blend on high until well mixed. Pour the smoothie into tall glasses and top with a little low-calorie whipped topping, a strawberry and a Hershey's kiss.

Jello Hearts

These jello hearts are always a favorite with the kids. Prepare a package of strawberry yellow according to package directions. If you'd like, you can fold in a few finely chopped strawberries at the end. Pour the jello mixture into a baking dish and allow it to harden. Use heart shaped cookie cutters to cut hearts out of the red yellow mixture. Top each heart with half a strawberry (cut lengthwise).

I'm Getting Sick And Tired

I was watching an author talk about his new book that he had just released, the book is called war footing, I for whatever reason can't seem to remember the authors name who wrote the book, but he made some very good points about things that wee as a country need to do to help secure our way of life, and the freedoms that we enjoy and hold so close to our hearts.

He talked about the Saudi Arabians and the power and influence that their beginning to gain due to all the money that they have from oil sales, he was saying that he'd done some research in to the strangle hold that people are beginning to show on certain parts of our country, if you have noticed lately there are a lot of these mosques going up in our country, and in some way the Arabs have their hands in the cookie jar.

Cookie

They are the ones who are loaning these people the money to build these things, and it needs to stop, he was saying that once they get them built, they are importing their hand picked people to run them, people who were trained in their country to be terrorists and all around morons, but we still let it happen, yes we do have freedom in this country, but maybe certain people should have just a bit less.

Once these people import their hand picked people, they start to build their groups of sympathizers, and their collisions of terrorists, and we will lose control of our country and it way of life if this is allowed to continue, the Arabs are supplying most of the world's terrorists with their money to run their empires, their seed money if you will, to plant their seeds of terror where ever they go.

You an idiot if you don't think that these people are building up their sympathizers, and their collisions, and terrorist cells, the actions of these people needs to be monitored more heavily in this country, this author was talking about how their beginning to work their people in to our government and the armed forces, are you getting worried yet? If not then you are very slow to figure out what is going on here.

It has nothing to do with our government trying to take down it's own country, but rather our government is getting just a little to lax about how it takes care of this sort of thing, and I don't know if it has anything to do with the way that people are being forced to raise their children these days, but I'm betting that is.

The laws have become very stiff on the way people are allowed to raise their children, as far as discipline, come on people, we all know that time outs don't do anything, and we all know what does, but back to the topic at hand here, our government need to have the right to profile these people, and do background searches on them, and all while their held in quarantine until the search is done.

When and if they find any damming evidence on them, they will then have two choices; to either join the hospitable people at Leavenworth federal prison, or be sent back to their country, and never allowed to return to our country again, most of these people do have some bad motive for being in this country, they know that if they can take down the USA, the rest won't pose to much of a threat to their cause.

I'm getting sick and tired of having to be politically correct about everything, and I get told all the time that I need to be more tolerant, why do I need to do that? Just give me one good reason, and that reason needs to make sense, it needs to show me that what I'm saying in just way out there, and then I might back down, but since there is no good way to do this, well it just won't be happening any time soon.

Candle Making Molds For Pet Lovers

Candle making molds for pet lovers may seem difficult to find at first, but they are available. Some online retailers sell candle making molds in the shapes of dogs, cats, horses, and other pets. Shapes of pets themselves are fine, of course, but so are other shapes. Think outside the box. Molds for pet lovers can include any shape that is regularly associated with the animals they love.

For example, we have two "pet" seagulls on the deck of our waterfront home. I'm watching them as I write. Now, I can find candle making molds in seagull shapes, but I wanted something more amusing. Thinking outside the box, I found starfish candle making molds. Our two seagulls eat starfish as often as they can get them, and we have laughed at their attempts. They get two of the star's legs in their mouths, and there it will stay - wedged tightly. They drop it on the shore and try again, going for a different leg, but getting the same results. A wax seagull beside a wax starfish is a perfectly hilarious combination for our home.

Biscuit

Pet Dogs

Candle making molds of dog figures are much more common than seagulls, of course. Some of my favorites include:

· A poodle that is 6.5 inches high, and would be lovely in black or white
· Bull dog and hound dog shapes at 5.5 inch height
· A 5-inch mold that features a dog by a fire hydrant
· A latex golden retriever shape that is almost as detailed as our own dog.

A determined chandler can even find two dogs or puppies together.

What else would you use for dog lovers' creations? I found ball-shaped candle making molds that produce lovely wax tennis balls. Dog bones and dumbbells are also possibilities, and come in various sizes. How about a bird for your bird dog?

Want something more creative? Get candle making molds in the shape of dog biscuits and a dog dish. Then mix up a wax version of his favorite meal and set it beside him.

Pet Cats

Candle making molds of cats and kittens are also plentiful, which is great for cat lovers who want to honor their companions. I found these three in mere minutes:

· Fluffy-looking kitten candle making molds that are 5.5 inches high.
· A Siamese cat mold that is just a little taller.
· A mold of a skinny cat that's a full 17 inches high!
· A scary, 2 inch high Halloween cat that would create great treats

You know, if you are a cat person, that every wax cat needs a bow around its neck, and you can find cat shapes that have that bow. You also know that every wax kitten needs a wax mouse or a ball of wax yarn to play with - and you can find those shapes in plastic as well as other materials. You can also create tiny wax fish to embed in a gel "aquarium" to display beside your kittens.

By now, you get the idea. Candle making molds in pet shapes are readily available. Shapes that serve well for accessories can also be found without much trouble.

But What If...

What if your pet is something more exotic? What if you have a monkey? Suppose you have a pet camel or a pet giraffe?

I read of a cat that befriended a deer. That pet lover would probably enjoy having her wax kitten sitting at the feet of a wax deer.

Those shapes are more difficult to find, but this is where you think outside the box again. Get creative and you can create wonderful shapes that will please any pet lover.

Cookie Cutters

Cookie cutters come in a wider variety than do candle making molds, and are great for hard-to-find animal shapes. Use beeswax sheets or make paraffin wax sheets. Then cut shapes into wax "cookies." Stack the "cookies" with a wick between the center two. Seal them with microcrystalline wax, flatten one end, and you have a unique luminary.

Conclusion

Candle making molds for pet lovers include animal shapes and the shapes of items associated with pets. Combine them and you can create interesting gifts for every pet lover in your circle of family and friends. Display amusing combinations of pets and their toys at your next craft show, and you are sure to increase business.

How Inventors Shape Our Lives Everyday

Picture this- Millions of people do this routine: After waking up, they get up and take a shower; they use an iron board to press out their work clothes; since the room is pretty warm, they turn on the air conditioner to cool off; After using a hair brush in order to get ready for work, they go downstairs, open the refrigerator door to make some eggs. Then they use an egg beater to make some scrambled eggs. After breakfast, they leave for work after getting their cell phone and use the key on their key chain to lock the back door. So what does an iron board, air conditioner, hair brush, refrigerator, egg beater, cell phone key chain and lock have in common? All of those just mentioned products were created by African-Americans.

This article will focus on African-American Inventors who made products that we used almost every single day. These inventors created some amazing products that a lot of people didn't know, but sadly in the era of Jim Crow, they never received the credit or for that matter reap in the fortune that they richly deserve. In some case, these inventors created the product and without providing a patent for their invention, told people about their new creation. Since the product was not patented, these people would go somewhere to steal... I mean...make their own product, slap their name on it and gain instant fame. While doing research in this topic, it is truly amazing to find out that each inventor made their product with very primitive material, unlike the technology that we have in today's world.
